The destruction of the human race and other minor issues

Gee whiz, but people are complicated!

I'm taking a class entitled 'Ideas vs Matter' by Steve Jurvetson and Larry Lessig. We were talking today about the threat of viruses like smallpox wiping out the human race and what we could do contain an outbreak if it occurred. It's despairing and frustrating and exciting and hopeful all at the same time.

The most despairing part is that we are doing more to fuel hatred, distrust, suspicion and miscommunication at a global level than ever before. The hopeful part is that we could start working more collaboratively towards shared goals as a global unit, rather than as isolated nation states. The frustrating part is that this doesn't only happen at a global level between nation states - every day I am astounded by how much heartache and energy people put into distrusting one another - especially at an organisational level. I think that we must feed off the excitement that this somehow creates. Because it is neither logical nor conducive to united, rapid, constructive action. This must waste a lot of money. Someone should do a study.
